Mira Sorvino and S.J. Chiro are teaming up for an adaptation of father-daughter story “East of the Mountains.” The former will star in the drama based on David Guterson’s 1999 best-selling novel and the latter is slated to direct. Deadline confirmed the news.
Scheduled to kick off filming this month in Seattle and Columbia Plateau in eastern Washington this month, the pic follows “retired heart surgeon and recent widower Ben Givens (Tom Skerritt), who has recently learned he has terminal cancer. Determined to end his life on his own terms, Ben leaves his daughter (Sorvino) behind and sets off on a journey into Washington State’s Columbia Basin, where the people he meets, and the events that unfold, compel him further into life even in the face of death.”
Sorvino was among the dozens of women who came forward to accuse disgraced mogul Harvey Weinstein of sexual misconduct. She recently spoke in favor of stronger sexual assault laws in New York, and revealed that she is a survivor of date rape.
“Stuber” and “StartUp” are among Sorvino’s recent credits. Sorvino won an Oscar in 1996 for “Mighty Aphrodite.” Her upcoming projects include Melora Walters’ “Drowning,” a drama following a mother whose son decides to join the Army and fight the war in Iraq, and Coley Sohn’s “Dodie & Cheryl Get Hitched,” a comedy about lesbians who get married in a small town.
Chiro made her feature debut with 2017’s “Lane 1974,” a coming-of-age drama that made its world premiere at SXSW.
