Stage Musical Based on Alanis Morissette’s “Jagged Little Pill” to Bow in May 2018

Alanis Morissette: Morissette’s Twitter account

Alanis Morissette’s breakout album “Jagged Little Pill” is set to reach a whole new generation. The 1995 album serves as the basis of an upcoming stage musical of the same name, debuting at the American Repertory Theater in Cambridge, Mass. in May 2018. “Waitress’” Diane Paulus will direct from a book by Diablo Cody (“Juno,” “Young Adult”). Tom Kitt (“Next to Normal”) will provide orchestrations and arrangements. Thrillist broke the news via Twitter.

“This team that has come together for thisJagged Little Pill’ musical is my musical theater dream come true,” Morissette said. “The chemistry between all of us is crackling and I feel honored to be diving into these songs again, surrounded by all of this searing talent. Diablo and Diane are already taking these deeply personal songs that are part of my soul’s marrow to a whole other level of hope, freedom, and complexity.”

“‘Jagged Little Pill’ defined a generation,” Paulus added. “Yet the raw, emotional honesty of Alanis’ songs feels more needed now than ever.”

The seminal album has sold over 33 million copies worldwide. Featuring songs like “You Oughta Know,” “All I Really Want,” and “Ironic,” it nabbed nine Grammy nods and won for Album of the Year and Best Rock Album. Since then, Morissette has released five other albums. Also an actress, she has appeared in films like “Dogma,” series such as “Sex and the City” and Jenji Kohan’s “Weeds,” and theater productions of Eve Ensler’s “The Vaginia Monologues” and “The Exonerated.”

The “Jagged Little Pill” musical is expected to eventually open on Broadway, but no official date has been set yet.
