“SMILF” Renewed for Season 2

“SMILF”

This calls for a celebratory snack run. “SMILF” is getting a second season, The Hollywood Reporter confirms. Frankie Shaw’s Showtime comedy centers on young single mother Bridgette (Shaw) and her daily struggle to make ends meet. Shaw adapted the series from her Sundance award-winning short of the same name.

“SMILF” is halfway through its first season and has netted some impressive ratings. It’s averaging 4.4 million viewers per episode across all platforms, “making it Showtime’s most successful launch since the drama ‘Billions,’” THR reports.

“From its first episode, the refreshingly honest point of view of ‘SMILF’ broke through with audiences, the press, and on social media,” commented Showtime Networks programming prez Gary Levine. “Frankie Shaw is a creative force to be reckoned with and we love having her on Showtime. Her show is funny and forthright, pointed and poignant, irreverent and relevant, all at once. We can’t wait to see where Frankie takes ‘SMILF’ next season.”

So far, four episodes of “SMILF” have aired, and all of them have been written and directed by women. Shaw helmed the pilot episode and Leslye Headland (“Sleeping with Other People”) directed the other three installments. The series co-stars Rosie O’Donnell, Samara Weaving (“Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri”), and Miguel Gomez (“The Strain”).

Shaw’s previous screen credits include “Good Girls Revolt,” “Mr. Robot,” and “Stronger.” Besides both versions of “SMILF,” she’s directed two episodes of “Cassandra French’s Finishing School” and the short “Too Legit.” You can catch her next in “Fluidic,” a sci-fi epic tracing three interconnected love stories. It’s expected to premiere sometime in 2018.

“SMILF” airs Sunday nights on Showtime.
