16 of 76 Oscar Foreign Language Submissions Directed by Women

A record number of 76 films were submitted this year for the 2014 Foreign Language Film Oscar. Last year, 71 films were submitted.

Moldova, Saudi Arabia and Montenegro submitted films for the first time and Pakistan submitted a film for the first time in 50 years. 16 of the 76 films submitted are directed or co-directed by women.

The Czech Republic submitted Agnieszka Holland’s Burning Bush, but it was disqualified since it first aired as a three part miniseries on HBO Europe before being released in theaters.
