Alexandra Wallace, senior vice president of NBC News, was just announced as the new executive in charge of the Today show. At a whopping four hours, the program is one of the most profitable of NBC’s slate.

Today has been in upheaval since the controversial letting go of fan favorite Ann Curry. Since the replacement of Curry by Savannah Guthrie coupled with Matt Lauer, Today has been consistently losing in the ratings to Good Morning America.

Wallace is the first woman to head Today in its 60 year history. This seems strange considering, as The New York Times reports, 65% of Today’s audience is women. Wallace, who is also in charge of Rock Center, is replacing Jim Bell, who has run Today since 2005. Bell was the one who ousted Curry.

As of now, a producer who will be working with Wallace has not yet been named.
