“Awkward” Creator Lauren Iungerich Has a New Comedy Series in the Works at Netflix

“On My Block”

“Awkward” creator Lauren Iungerich is set to deliver another coming-of-age comedy. Deadline reports that Netflix has ordered 10 episodes of a new half-hour series she co-created titled “On My Block.” She’s collaborating on the project with “All Eyez On Me” screenwriters Eddie Gonzalez and Jeremy Haft.

Scheduled to debut in 2018, “On My Block” follows “four bright and street-savvy friends navigating their way through the triumph, pain, and the newness of high-school set in the rough inner city.” The cast includes Jessica Marie Garcia (“Liv and Maddie”), Diego Tinoco (“Teen Wolf”), and Jason Genao (“The Get Down”).

“Awkward” starred Ashley Rickards as Jenna Hamilton, an unpopular teen whose life changes overnight when she’s mistakenly thought to have attempted suicide. The fallout of the misunderstanding is, as the show’s title suggests, awkward. Iungerich exited the series following the completion of its third season, but it aired for five seasons on MTV, from 2011–2016.

“I had no idea how much telling this high school story — how making the show in general — would challenge me fundamentally as a human being with relationships, and how personal it felt,” Iungerich has said about her time working on “Awkward.” “People always say it’s not personal, it’s just business — it’s not true. It’s always personal when you’re doing anything artistic, and anybody who says anything different isn’t an artist in my opinion.” She explained, “Whatever you do, whether you’re literally behind the camera, or painting the sets, or in front of the camera bringing a character to life, or bringing that character to life on the page, it’s all very personal. I think the hardest thing I didn’t anticipate experiencing was how difficult it is to be the manager of all these incredibly talented, creative people. When you are the boss you get the praise and you also get the criticism, and you’re the first one that people attack, and I wasn’t prepared for that.”
