Trailer Watch: Cynthia Erivo Pays Tribute to Harriet Tubman’s Legacy in “Harriet”

"Harriet"

“I’m going to be free or die,” says Cynthia Erivo (“Widows”) in a new trailer for “Harriet.” Kasi Lemmons’ biopic of Harriet Tubman sees the political activist risking her life and traveling 100 miles to escape slavery. And that’s just the beginning of her journey.

Harriet can’t rest until her family is free too. We see her sacrifice her own safety in the hopes of freeing others from slavery. “I will give every last drop of blood in my veins until this monster called slavery is dead,” she insists.

The real-life Tubman, who was born in 1822 and died in 1913, freed hundreds of slaves.

Lemmons’ feature credits include “Eve’s Bayou” and “Black Nativity.” She’s directed episodes of TV series such as “Luke Cage” and “Shots Fired,” and stepped behind the camera for the pilot of “Madam C.J. Walker,” Netflix’s upcoming limited series about the black hair care mogul.

“Harriet” hits theaters November 1. Janelle MonĂ¡e (“Hidden Figures”) co-stars.
