A newly released trailer for Ginevra Elkann’s “Magari” (“If Only”) kicks off with a young girl pleading with the saints on her knees. “I’ll make a sacrifice and drink this glass of pee,” she tells them, holding a glass filled with her urine. “In exchange for this effort, get Mom and Dad back together.” If the spot is any indication, her prayers go unanswered. Her parents can’t seem to stand one another.
“Magari” is set to make its world premiere as the opening film at the Locarno Film Festival, which runs from August 7-17 this year.
The comedy centers on three siblings living in Paris with their Russian-Orthodox mother. “One day they are suddenly sent off into the arms of their absent, unconventional, and completely broke Italian father Carlo, who has no idea how to look after himself, let alone his kids,” Variety, who premiered the trailer, summarizes.
“Magari” marks Elkann’s feature debut. She co-wrote the semi-autobiographical screenplay with Chiara Barzini.
