Lena Dunham at Fortune’s Most Powerful Women Summit and New Book Proposal

Lena Dunham is on a roll that looks like it cannot be stopped. Despite getting shut out of the Emmys, Dunham has been busy with season 2 of Girls (airing in January), publishing essays in The New Yorker and co-writing the film Nobody Walks (out October 12).

Dunham recently spoke at Fortune’s Most Powerful Women Summit. Here is the full transcript of the interview.

Dunham talked with Soledad O’Brien about being a powerful woman, the controversy surrounding the diversity issues on Girls and having to write parts for herself:

…I think it was hard for me to acknowledge that acting was something that I wanted to do, both because there is a little bit of the perception that it wasn’t sort of an intellectual pursuit because of the fact that it didn’t necessarily feel like there was going to be a place for someone who looked and acted like me to play anyone besides someone’s sort of like a sassy best friend who can’t stay away from the buffet, and because I loved writing and directing, it seemed like why would I not just hire the person who looks right and knows how to do this job. But I always wanted to act, and I would always get like a horrible part in the play, but it was like as the bouncing ball, or like — I was always being asked to play a man, which was really stressful.

Dunham is also shopping around a book proposal tentatively titled Not That Kind of Girl: Advice by Lena Dunham looked like it was going to go for $1 million dollars, but now, the bidding has reached upwards of $3.6 million dollars. As reported by Browbeat, Slate’s Culture Blog, the book will consist of various personal essays ranging on topics from sex to work, eating disorders to travel and touch upon much more.
