A trailer for Sophia Takal’s “Black Christmas” reboot has landed, and it looks like the cult favorite slasher pic has gotten a feminist update.
The spot kicks off with Hawthorne College’s Christmas celebrations. Mu Kappa Epsilon sisters are decking the halls, drinking, and partying in Santa costumes, but the festivities take an unexpected turn when one of their sisters goes missing.
Riley (Imogen Poots, “Green Room”) and Kris (Aleyse Shannon, “Charmed”) are concerned. Everyone else, including their fellow sisters and campus security, tells them to calm down and wait it out — advice that comes with fatal consequences. A black-masked stalker has kicked off a killing spree, killing sorority women one by one.
“I will bring you to your knees,” Riley is warned via text message. But Riley and Co. aren’t going down without a fight.
“As the body count rises, Riley and her squad start to question whether they can trust any man, including …. esteemed classics instructor Professor Gelson (Cary Elwes),” the film’s synopsis hints. “Whoever the killer is, he’s about to discover that this generation’s young women aren’t about to be anybody’s victims.”
As Kris puts it, “You messed with the wrong sisters.”
Mackenzie Davis (“Halt and Catch Fire”) and Caitlin FitzGerald (“Masters of Sex”) led Takal’s last feature, 2016 psychological thriller “Always Shine.”
“Black Christmas” hits theaters December 13. Takal co-wrote the script with April Wolfe.
