Emily Watson is sticking with STEM. The actress is following up her Emmy-nominated role as a nuclear physicist in “Chernobyl” by playing a forensic psychiatrist in “Too Close,” an upcoming ITV miniseries hailing from from Snowed-In Productions. Deadline confirmed the news.

Based on the 2018 novel of the same name, “Too Close” sees Dr. Emma Robertson (Watson) “assigned to work with a woman accused of a heinous crime but who claims she can’t remember a thing,” the source summarizes. “It is the story of how two women become dangerously close when fate forces them together.”

Clara Salaman is adapting the book, which she wrote under the pseudonym Natalie Daniels. Also an actress, her on-screen credits include “EastEnders” and “The Bill.”

“’Too Close’ is a brilliant script where you are never sure who has the power – the psychologist or her patient, or whether Connie, [the patient,] is the monster she’s portrayed as,” said ITV Head of Drama Polly Hill, who commissioned the series. “I’m delighted that Emily Watson is going to play Emma, who will be phenomenal and I’m looking forward to working with Ruth Kenley-Letts and the team at Snowed-In Productions to bring this fantastic adaptation to ITV.”

Watson received Oscar nods for “Hilary and Jackie” and “Breaking the Waves.” Her recent credits include “On Chesil Beach” and PBS’ adaptation of “Little Women.”

“I think the media decides it’s your last fuckable day,” Watson has said. “You play lots of leading ladies, and then you’re playing a lot of mothers.”
