Anna and Elsa’s story took in over $1.2 billion on the big screen, and now the “Frozen” sisters are making a major mark on Broadway. Disney Theatricals’ adaptation of the pic “shattered the opening box office record for its Broadway home, the St. James Theatre, in its first full week of shows,” Deadline reports. Since its March 22 debut, the musical grossed “$2,246,998 over eight performances for the week ending Sunday, according to the Broadway League, which compiles the figures.”

The previous eight-show mark record holder at the venue was “The Producers,” which took in $1,600,243 during its first week in January 2004.

Written and co-directed by Jennifer Lee, 2013’s “Frozen” stars Idina Menzel as Elsa, a newly-crowned queen who flees after accidentally freezing her kingdom in eternal winter. Her sister Anna, voiced by Kristen Bell, embarks on an epic journey to find her sister. “Frozen” took home two Oscars and is the tenth-highest grossing film of all time.

“Let It Go” scribe Kristen Anderson-Lopez co-wrote the music and lyrics for the Broadway musical, and Lee penned the book. Elsa and Anna are portrayed by Caissie Levy and Patti Murin, respectively.

Directed by Julie Taymor, “The Lion King” is the top-grossing Broadway musical of all time, and has taken in over $1.43 billion since its 1997 opening.

“Frozen 2” is set to hit multiplexes November 27, 2019.
