“Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” Returning for Fourth and Final Season

“Crazy Ex-Girlfriend”

Some bittersweet news for “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” fans: Rachel Bloom and co. will be returning to West Covina for a fourth season, but it’ll mark the final installment of the critically acclaimed musical dramedy. The CW announced the renewal news on Monday, though the network made no mention of the series’ endgame, according to The Hollywood Reporter. It was co-creator and star Bloom who referred to the show’s upcoming fourth season as its “final season” in a tweet.

“We’re a show about a very specific journey in a person’s life. And it’s not really a sitcom meant to spit out copies of itself,” Bloom previously told THR. “Very early on, we called it a 50-hour movie. I think we’re beyond that now. There’s always going to be plot movement, so there’s only so far I think you can go with that. It could be five [seasons], but I think around four would be ideal for us creatively.”

“Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” sees Bloom playing Rebecca Bunch, an Ivy League-educated NYC lawyer who radically changes her life after a chance encounter with Josh Chan (Vincent Rodriguez III), her first love from summer camp. After he tells her he’s leaving New York for West Covina, California, she decides to quit her prominent law firm and do the same — hence the show’s title, “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend.” But as Bloom sings in the opening credits of the show, “That’s a sexist term” and “the situation’s a lot more nuanced than that.”

The show’s third season finale — directed and co-written by co-creator Aline Brosh McKenna — aired in February. Songs from the season included “Let’s Generalize About Men,” “A Diagnosis,” and “First Penis I Saw.”

“Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” has received three Emmy nominations and Bloom took home a Golden Globe in 2016 for her acting in the series.
