Paramount’s 2020 Slate Includes 16 Movies, and Just One Is Directed by a Woman

"The Rhythm Section": Paramount

Paramount’s current 2020 film slate includes 16 films, and exactly one of them is directed by a woman: Reed Morano’s Blake Lively-starrer “The Rhythm Section.” As it stands, about six percent of the features they’ll release next year are helmed by a woman.

(Paramount has not confirmed the directing credits on one feature, “Spell,” but its IMDb page lists a male director.)

Back in April 2018 Deadline reported that Paramount’s then-new chairman and CEO Jim Gianopulos issued a mandate to “hire more female directors onto projects.” At that time, they only had one such film in production, “but the town understands this is an inherited situation that new management is now working to turn around,” Deadline wrote. When will we start to see these changes taking effect? 2021? 2022? Because in 2020, we’re seeing no signs of improvement.

Between 2010 and 2019, the only women-directed and co-directed titles the studio produced and/or distributed theatrically were Jennifer Yuh Nelson’s “Kung Fu Panda 2” (2011), Jane Lipsitz and Dan Cutforth’s “Katy Perry: Part of Me” (2012), Anne Fletcher’s “The Guilt Trip” (2012), Ava DuVernay’s “Selma” (2014), Clea DuVall’s “The Intervention (2016), and Bonni Cohen and Jon Shenk’s “An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth to Power” (2017). That’s six films — out of more than 100.

Set to hit theaters January 31, “The Rhythm Section” sees Lively playing a woman seeking revenge against those responsible for orchestrating the plane crash that killed her family. Morano won an Emmy for directing the pilot of “The Handmaid’s Tale.” Her feature credits include “I Think We’re Alone Now” and “Meadowland.”
