“You used your magical powers,” Juliette Binoche tells Catherine Deneuve in a new trailer for “The Truth.” “I’m on the verge of forgiving you.” The drama sees Lumir (Binoche) traveling from New York City with her husband and child to reunite with her mother, Fabienne (Deneuve), in Paris. An icon of French cinema, Fabienne is accustomed to being fawned over by her many admirers. Lumir isn’t quite as impressed with her mother as her fans are, and the road to forgiveness isn’t an easy one.
“You’re so vain,” Lumir says to her mother. “It’s unbelievable.” That vanity can manifest as rewriting history. We see Lumir confronting her mother about misrepresenting their relationship by fabricating memoriesĀ in her best-selling book. Fabienne also exaggerates the number of copies her memoir has sold.
Before the mother and daughter part ways, “truths will be told, accounts settled, loves and resentments confessed,” the film’s synopsis hints. But there’ll be a few jokes, too. The spot shows Fabienne and Lumir sharing a laugh imagining if the former had starred in an Alfred Hitchcock film — and been murdered on-screen.
Deneuve was nominated for an Oscar in 1993 for “Indochine.” “Standing Tall” and “Claire Darling” are among her more recent credits.
Binoche won an Oscar in 1997 for “The English Patient” and scored a nod in 2001 for “Chocolat.” Her recent credits include “High Life” and “Non-Fiction.”
“The Truth” will arrive in select U.S. theaters March 20.
