Mara Brock Akil Inks Network-Direct Script Deal with Fox Entertainment

Akil: Northwestern

Mara Brock Akil is heading to Fox for her next TV project. Variety confirms the “Being Mary Jane” creator and veteran television writer-producer has signed a network-direct script deal with Fox Entertainment. The pact will see Akil developing and writing a scripted show that will air on Fox and be produced by Fox Entertainment. No word on what the project will be about.

“Mara is a truly gifted writer, with a strong point of view. From ‘Girlfriends’ to ‘The Game’ to ‘Being Mary Jane,’ she’s a proven hitmaker with the unique ability to write both comedy and drama,” said Michael Thorn, president of entertainment at Fox Entertainment. “Since the formation of Fox Entertainment, we’ve said we want to be in business with the best and the brightest, and no one exemplifies that more than Mara Brock Akil.”

Akil won NAACP Image Awards for writing on “Being Mary Jane” and “The Game.” The latter is a spin-off of “Girlfriends,” the first show Akil created.

“’Girlfriends’ was one of the highest-rated scripted series among African Americans in the 18-34 demographic during its eight-season run on UPN and then the CW,” the source details. “The Game” originally aired on the CW, but when the network canceled it in 2009, BET snagged the comedy and aired an additional six seasons.

“Being Mary Jane,” a drama following the professional and romantic adventures of a TV reporter played by Gabrielle Union, ran from 2013-2019 on BET. Akil also created the OWN romance “Love Is_” and executive produces superhero series “Black Lightning.” She’s directed episodes of “Love Is_” and “The Game.”
