Trailer Watch: Amy Ryan Leads the Search for Her Missing Daughter in Liz Garbus’ “Lost Girls”

"Lost Girls": Sundance Institute

A trailer has arrived for Liz Garbus’ first narrative feature. “Lost Girls” is inspired by true events and sees the Oscar-nominated documentary filmmaker telling the story of a mother determined to find her missing daughter at all costs.

Mari (Amy Ryan) puts a new missing person poster up for her daughter Shannan at the police station every day that she’s gone. Shannan’s last contact with anyone was with 911, yet the police can’t offer any answers about what happened to her — and it seems as though they don’t care because she is a sex worker. “What was she doing in a gated community a hundred miles away from home the the middle of the night?” an especially dismissive officer asks. He later wonders aloud, “Honestly, who spends this much time looking for a missing hooker?”

While looking for a missing girl, the officers find four bodies, but Shannan’s isn’t among them. After connecting with the families of the late women, Mari is determined to spread the word about what’s going on despite officers’ warnings not to talk to the media. “No one’s talking about our girls, and when they do, it’s ‘prostitute,’ ‘hooker’ — [it’s] never mother, daughter. It is our job to make sure these girls are not forgotten,” she observes. “I have been dismissed and ignored but one thing I won’t be is silenced. It’s time for accountability.”

Ryan received an Oscar nod for playing the mother of a missing child in 2007’s “Gone Baby Gone.” “Late Night” and “Beautiful Boy” are among her more recent credits.

Garbus received Oscar nods for 2015’s “What Happened, Miss Simone?” and 1998’s “The Farm: Angola, USA.”

“Lost Girls” hits select theaters and Netflix March 13. The pic will make its world premiere at Sundance later this month and will screen as the Narrative Centerpiece at the Athena Film Festival in February. Thomasin McKenzie (“Jojo Rabbit”) and Lola Kirke (“Mozart in the Jungle”) co-star.
