Netflix Commissions British Figuring Skating Drama “Zero Chill”

Kat Baker isn’t the only figure skater on Netflix’s radar. The streamer, which is home to “Spinning Out,” has commissioned “Zero Chill,” a YA figure skating drama from All3Media-backed Lime Pictures. Deadline broke the news.

Created by “Free Rein” and “Doc Martin” scribes Kirstie Falkous and John Regier, “Zero Chill” “follows 15-year old figure skater Kayla, whose life is up-ended from Canada to the UK when her twin brother Mac gets a place at a legendary hockey academy,” the source summarizes. “Distraught at her parents’ decision to put her brother’s ambitions before her own, Kayla must find her place on the ice again in the shadow of her superstar brother.”

The 10-part series stars Grace Beedie (“Motherland”) as Kayla.

“Zero Chill” is currently in production in Sheffield, UK and is expected to debut on Netflix later this year. The show reportedly “features a fully skating cast, with a fluid camera style giving the audience the feel of actually being on the ice with the characters.”

“The twin worlds of hockey and figure skating are rich with story. And there’s so much talent out there; we’ve found a truly international cast of young actors who are genuinely skilled on the ice,” said Tim Compton, who runs Lime Pictures’ kids division and will exec produce. “This, combined with fresh and exciting writing talent, will make ‘Zero Chill’ something really special for the kids and family audience.”

“Zero Chill” sounds like it will be decidedly less edgy than “Spinning Out,” which dropped on Netflix January 1. Kaya Scodelario stars as Kat Baker, a gifted competitive skater whose career is derailed after an injury leaves her terrified of performing jumps. Behind the scenes, Kat struggles with self-harm and bipolar disorder, an extremely competitive sister (Willow Shields), and a domineering mother (January Jones) dealing with her own mental health issues. No word on whether “Spinning Out,” which was created by former figure skater and “Search Party” writer Samantha Stratton, will return for a second season.
