DP Nancy Schreiber to Receive Susan B. Anthony Award at High Falls Film Fest

Prolific cinematographer Nancy Schreiber will be honored Thursday at the High Falls Film Festival, an annual event celebrating female filmmakers. The “Better Things” DP is set to receive the Susan B. Anthony “Failure is Impossible” Award “in recognition of her contributions to the art of filmmaking as one of the few female cinematographers working today,” Variety reports. The awards ceremony will kick off the fest.

Schreibner has more than 100 credits as a cinematographer to her name and over 40 as a member of the camera/electrical crew. She is also the first woman to ever receive the American Society of Cinematographers’ (ASC) Presidents Award.

“If this award does anything, it will open some doors to the younger generation of women, to show that they can succeed, that they can work in all areas of the film and television industry,” Schreiber said of the ASC honor.

Cinematography is a field that is especially difficult for women to break into — a report from The Center for the Study of Women in Television & Film found that women represented only three percent of cinematographers on 2016’s top 100 films.

Schreiber recently worked on Emilie Upczak’s human trafficking drama “Moving Parts” and Ondi Timoner’s Robert Mapplethorpe biopic “Mapplethorpe.”

The High Falls Film Festival will be held November 2–6 in Rochester, NY.
