In the new trailer for “Banana Split,” college-bound April (Hannah Marks) is mourning the end of her two-year relationship with Nick (Dylan Sprouse). She’s so upset that she’s lost her appetite and her mother has to remind her to eat her dinner. “She’s allowed to be depressed,” April’s younger sister says. “No one as good as Nick will ever love her again.”

Turns out that’s probably not true. Shortly after her breakup, April goes to a party and meets Nick’s new girlfriend, Clara (Liana Liberato). Even though she’s looking for “a reason to give [her] a black eye,” April has to admit that Clara’s pretty awesome. It’s not long before the two are hanging out regularly and referring to themselves as best friends.

In order to make the friendship work, April and Clara agree to some ground rules: they can’t talk about Nick with each other, and they can’t tell Nick about their friendship. Predictably, those parameters don’t solve all their problems. They have friends that might spill the beans at any moment, and April and Nick may still have feelings for one another.

Marks wrote “Banana Split” with Joey Power. The duo previously wrote and directed comedy-drama “After Everything.” You can see Marks next in Kris Rey’s “I Used to Go Here,” a comedy about a novelist who returns to her alma mater that premieres at SXSW March 14. The multi-hyphenate has several projects in the works, including open relationship comedy “Mark, Mary & Some Other People,” which she’s writing, directing, and producing.

Liberato’s previous credits include “To the Bone,” “To the Stars,” and “Light as a Feather.”
