Today in non-controversial “Star Wars” news: You won’t have to wait for “The Last Jedi” to hit theaters to see more of Rey, Daisy Ridley’s badass “Force Awakens” character. A trailer has been released for Disney’s “Star Wars: Forces of Destiny,” an animated series about the women of the Galaxy Far, Far Away.
Each 2–3 minute short depicts “the untold stories that helped shape the destinies” of the “Star Wars” franchise’s female characters, a press release details. Film mainstays Princess Leia (voiced here by Shelby Young, “Smurfs: The Lost Village”), Rey, and Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones) will appear alongside Sabine Wren (Tiya Sircar) and Ahsoka Tano (Ashley Eckstein) of the “Star Wars: Rebels” series.
“The choices we make, the actions we take, shape us into forces of destiny,” the series’ narrator, Maz Kanata (Lupita Nyong’o), hints as the ladies suit up, wield their lightsabers, and take on the Empire in the trailer.
The storylines and plot developments in “Forces of Destiny” will be part of the official “Star Wars” canon.
Beginning July 3, one “Forces of Destiny” short will debut on Disney’s YouTube channel every day at 10AM PDT until the whole series is available. On July 9 all eight episodes will air on Disney Channel.
“Star Wars: The Last Jedi” opens December 15.
