Trailer Watch: A Woman Falls for Her Brother’s Girlfriend in “Heartland”

“Heartland”

“Carrie?” Lauren (Velinda Godfrey) says in a new trailer for “Heartland.” “Would you maybe want to do something crazy with me right now?” So begins a couple days of fun and adventure for Lauren and Carrie. The women swim, party, ride around on a Vespa, and fall hard for each other. The only problem is that Carrie is already in a relationship — with Lauren’s brother Justin (Aaron Leddick).

From first-time feature director Maura Anderson, “Heartland” follows Lauren as she grieves for her late girlfriend, Nicole. Still reeling from the loss and living back at home with her mother (Beth Grant, “The Mindy Project”), romance is the last thing on Lauren’s mind. That changes when Justin and Carrie arrive and announce their plans to open a winery. “Soon, an attraction between the two women erupts,” the film’s official synopsis details. And “Lauren rediscovers her sense of fun and Carrie questions her sexuality.” Unfortunately, their affair has ramifications.

“I am sorry your girlfriend’s dead,” Justin yells at Lauren. “Doesn’t mean you get mine!”

“Heartland” is partially inspired by Godfrey’s own upbringing and hometown. Godfrey, who also wrote and produced the film, “surprised her Oklahoma classmates by bringing a girl to senior prom,” a press release details. She previously collaborated with Anderson on the 2015 short “The Mess.”

“Heartland” will be released on VOD, DVD, and digital platforms on June 6.
