A trailer has finally landed for Alison Brie-starrer “GLOW,” and it’s perfect. The Netflix series is set in the ’80s and centers on Ruth (Brie, “Community”), an out-of-work actress who ends up entering the intense and bizarre world of professional wrestling. The spot kicks off with Ruth at an audition delivering a powerful monologue about how she “won’t be bullied into submission.” She’s interrupted and told that she’s reading the man’s part. Ruth is actually supposed to be reading for the part of a secretary. “I’m interested in real parts,” she says. Clearly “GLOW” has a lot to say about the kinds of roles available to women.
The promo reveals how Ruth finds a “real” part under highly unusual circumstances. Her agent lets her know about a project looking to cast “unconventional women,” so she heads to an audition — held at a gym — for “GLOW,” short for “Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling.” As Ruth quickly finds out, she won’t just be playing a wrestler — she will be stepping into the ring and getting physical. She’ll finally have the opportunity to portray a woman who won’t be bullied into submission. As one of her co-stars explains, “We’re empowered. We’re the heroes.”
“GLOW” was created by Liz Flahive (“Homeland”) and Carly Mensch (“Nurse Jackie”). You can catch it on Netflix June 23.
