After battling sickness in “Sharp Objects” and “Little Women” Eliza Scanlen finds herself in another medical crisis in “Babyteeth.” The coming-of-age drama sees the actress playing a seriously ill teen who falls head over heels in love. A trailer for the pic just dropped.
Milla (Scanlen) first crosses paths with Moses (Toby Wallace), a small-time drug dealer, when he asks her for money on the street. She agrees on the condition that he give her a haircut similar to his. Milla’s parents are shocked by her unrecognizable hairstyle, but even more so by the fact that Milla brings Moses home for dinner. “You make a habit of befriending girls that are significantly younger than yourself?” her father (Ben Mendelsohn) asks.
Concerned by their daughter’s obsession with the 23-year-old but encouraged by her renewed passion for life, Milla’s parents struggle to navigate the increasingly tense situation. They are convinced “that boy has problems” — but Milla is quick to point out that she has problems, too.
“Babyteeth” marks Shannon Murphy’s (“Killing Eve”) feature directorial debut. Rita Kalnejais (“Surge”) penned the script. The film made its world premiere last year at Venice Film Festival and hits theaters and On Demand June 19.
