I am so glad to read that Drew Barrymore has signed on to direct a new film. BUT I am none too pleased that this could be a redo of He’s Just Not That Into You (which was dreadful). Barrymore and her company Flower Film produced He’s Just Not That Into You and reports are that she will be reteaming with that film’s writers — Marc Silverstein and Abby Kohn — on this film.
It is called How to Be Single and is based on a novel by Liz Tuccillo.
I very much liked Barrymore’s directorial debut Whip-It. I thought the film was great and still don’t understand why it didn’t do any business at the box office. I am going to hope that this new film which “explores the love lives and break-ups of a group of New Yorkers over the course of ten years” won’t be a regressive anti-feminist chick flick.
Based on her Whip-It debut, I will give Barrymore the benefit of the doubt…for now. I’m just sad that she felt she had to go in the direction of what sounds like a standard romantic comedy to score her second gig. I was really hoping that she would become an outside the box director. But she has to get a successful film under her belt and this is her chance. If she would do a second film that did not fly she would be cooked as a director. It’s probably a good business decision for her and her company.
