“When I was young, Parvana, I knew what peace felt like,” a father tells his daughter in a new trailer for “The Breadwinner.” He explains, “Stories remain in our hearts even when all else is gone.” The family is living under the Taliban regime, and it’s stories of peace that seem to sustain them and offer them hope for the future.
Based on the best-selling YA novel by Deborah Ellis, “The Breadwinner” is helmed by Nora Twomey, co-directer of the Oscar-nominated animated feature “The Secret of Kells.” The drama centers on Parvana (Saara Chaudry, “Max and Shred”), who cuts her hair and disguises herself as a boy so she can earn money for her family after her father is imprisoned. The film’s official synopsis describes “The Breadwinner” as “a powerful and riveting story of self-empowerment and imagination in the face of oppression,” but the trailer makes no promise of a happy ending. “Just wait and see,” we’re told.
Angelina Jolie is among the film’s executive producers. “I am proud to be a part of this beautiful film with this timely and very important subject matter,” the “Maleficent” star said in a statement. “Millions of girls around the world have to grow up before their time, working to provide for their families at a very young age and in difficult circumstances. They have the strength to do what no one should ask little girls to do. I hope this film is able to bring this discussion to a broader audience. As much as it is an important and very meaningful film, it also stands on its own as a great piece of art,” she emphasized. “Director Nora Twomey and her team have done something very special. They have breathed life into the characters and paid respect to the subject matter and to a country where women often struggle.”
“The Breadwinner” will hit theaters this fall. Anita Doron (“The End of Silence”) penned the script.
