AmDoc, Pinewood Atlanta Launch Kickstarter Campaigns to Support Rising Filmmakers

The AmDoc staff: amdoc.org

American Documentary (AmDoc) and Pinewood Atlanta Studios have both started Kickstarter funds for up and coming filmmakers. Per Variety, AmDoc is teaming up with the Knight Foundation to support aspiring documentarians. Pinewood is set to bolster projects from Georgia women specifically.

The Knight AmDoc Patron Fund is looking to raise $100,000 for “the production and promotion of nonfiction film and media in the 26 cities* where Knight invests.” This campaign marks one of the first Kickstarter Patrons programs, which gives organizations a platform to raise money for creative ventures.

Anyone can apply for the AmDoc/Knight funding, as long as they plan to make a documentary or nonfiction film, or transmedia project “utilizing traditional and emerging digital media.” Projects committed to on- and off-screen diversity are preferred.

The AmDoc staff will choose projects to fund biweekly and provide an initial contribution of $1,000-$10,000. Once a project’s fundraising has kicked off, AmDoc may make additional contributions or offer outreach support. When the fundraising campaign has reached its goal, “AmDoc will follow up with creators to offer additional media support and the opportunity to gain feedback, mentorship, and engagement strategies from AmDoc staff.”

“Creating the fund is part of AmDoc’s effort to expand its field-building initiatives and meet mediamakers where they are,” said Justine Nagan, executive director of AmDoc.

The Pinewood fund is seeking to raise $10,000 to help women from Georgia make movies. The org is looking for original stories, clear narratives, and unique, personal visions from applicants. Any production team applying for funding must include at least one female filmmaker residing in the state of Georgia. Pinewood will provide its artists mentorships, networking opportunities, and access to its vendors.
