Claire Foy-Starrer “Dust” Picked Up by Searchlight

Foy in "First Man": Universal Pictures/ DreamWork

The Claire Foy-starring horror-thriller “Dust,” first introduced at Cannes’ Virtual Market in June, has been acquired. According to Variety, rights to the Dust Bowl-set project have been snagged by Searchlight, the Disney branch formerly known as Fox Searchlight.

“Foy will portray a woman who becomes increasingly traumatized in 1930s Oklahoma amid the region’s horrific dust storms and convinces herself that a mysterious presence is threatening her family,” the source teases. “She then takes extraordinary measures to protect them.”

The project is expected to “be set around a remote farmhouse and would be fairly self-contained, with just a small number of starring roles and a minimalist aesthetic.”

Karrie Crouse and Will Joines will direct from a script Crouse developed at Sundance Writer’s Lab.

Shorts “The Tragedy of Glady” and “Be Still” and episodes of “MTV Decoded” are among Crouse’s previous directing credits. She penned the former two projects and served as a staff writer on “Westworld.”

Foy is best known for her Emmy, Golden Globe, and SAG Award-winning performance as Queen Elizabeth II in the first two seasons of “The Crown.” Her other credits include “The Girl in the Spider’s Web,” “First Man,” and “Unsane.” Next, she’s developing an adaptation of Charlotte McConaghy’s novel “Migrations,” with plans to topline and executive produce the project.
