“They say horses pick you,” we learn in the trailer for the latest remake of “Black Beauty,” from writer-director Ashley Avis. That certainly is the case with the titular character (voiced by Kate Winslet), who is described as having “a real mean streak” but nevertheless bonds deeply with the teenaged Jo (Mackenzie Foy). Both Beauty and Jo know what it’s like to be torn from their families: the former was rounded up and captured, and the latter is an orphan.
“You’ve gotten closer to that filly in days than I have in weeks,” Jo’s uncle (Iain Glen), a horse trainer, tells her. But their love for one another unfortunately can’t keep them together. The owner of the stables where Jo and her uncle live decides to sell Beauty. “You’re my family,” Jo tells her horse as they say good bye. “You know that, right?” She and Beauty vow to find each other again, no matter what.
“Black Beauty” is based on the classic 1877 novel by Anna Sewell. Told from Black Beauty’s perspective, the book traces his journey from farm colt to hansom cab horse. The story has been adapted for film and TV several times before, including a 1994 movie from writer-director Caroline Thompson.
Avis’ previous credits include features “Adolescence,” “The Trouble with Mistletoe,” and “Deserted,” and episodics “The Cynical Life of Harper Hall” and “Premium Cali.”
You can see Winslet next in the lesbian period romance “Ammonite,” in theaters this Friday, November 13. She won an Oscar in 2009 for “The Reader.” She’s also received nods for “Steve Jobs,” “Little Children,” “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind,” “Iris,” “Titanic,” and “Sense and Sensibility.”
“Black Beauty” will begin streaming on Disney+ November 27.
