Robin Thede and Co. will be bringing more hilarious sketches like “Negro League Groupies,” “No Makeup,” and “Bad Bitch Support Group” to the small screen. HBO has renewed “A Black Lady Sketch Show” for a second season. The half-hour narrative sketch comedy show premiered on the premium cable network earlier this month.
“A Black Lady Sketch Show” tackles subjects such as beauty standards, racism, and dating. Thede created the show and stars. The former host of BET’s “The Rundown” is also among its exec producers, as is “Insecure’s” Issa Rae. “A Black Lady Sketch Show’s” cast also includes Ashley Nicole Black, Gabrielle Dennis, and Quinta Brunson.
“It’s been thrilling to see the audience embrace the characters that Robin, Ashley, Gabrielle, and Quinta have brought to life,” said Amy Gravitt, executive vice president, HBO Programming. “We had a blast making this groundbreaking sketch show with Robin, [director and co-executive producer] Dime [Davis], and all of the writers and producers, and I can’t wait to see what next season holds.”
Lauren Ashley Smith serves as head writer on “The Black Lady Sketch Show.”
Thede has said that the series is “definitely all about representation. It’s about showing Black women in so many different lights and so many different abilities,” she explained. “We each play dozens of characters throughout the season. Men, women, aliens, unnamed beings, we play it all — and to challenge the ideas of what Black women can do in comedy is true representation. It’s truly a political act to be on TV doing all of these things that we’re doing because I really think it’s going to challenge what people think about our limitations and our boundaries as women, and in particular as Black women, and thirdly as Black women comedians. I think there is only one way a lot of people think we can be, and I think this show will challenge that and shatter that notion.”
