With the arrival of Entertainment Weekly’s Summer Movie Preview last week, the summer blockbuster season is officially creeping upon us. As always, be prepared for explosions, superheroes, spacecrafts, car chases and a lot of dudes.
But for those of us who look for alternatives, this summer there is a range of women centric and directed films that are available for us. Films like Frances Ha, or ones that revel in taking blockbuster formulas with a decidedly lady-centric twist like The Heat. In the issue, Sandra Bullock said that The Heat is “the greatest love story I’ve ever done.” If I wasn’t sold already, I certainly am now.
Some films that we are looking forward to this summer include Sofia Coppola’s The Bling Ring, Maggie Carey’s The To-Do List, The Heat and Lake Bell’s In A World (which won the Waldo Salt writing award at Sundance) to name just a few. Check out the women-centric and directed summer releases below.
Let’s just make sure to support these films, some we have already seen, so that we can continue to have a range of options all times of the year.
