ABC Family is expanding its appeal to women in their twenties by adding two single-cam comedies from female creators to its development slate.
The cable network has ordered pilots from Awkward creator Lauren Iungerich and How I Met Your Mother co-executive producer Barbie Adler. To be written, directed and created by Iungerich, Tough Cookie will focus on a difficult parent-child relationship: “a young mother who isn’t ready to parent and her daughter who doesn’t want to be parented,” according to THR.
Adler’s Kevin From Work, on the other hand, focuses on a young man who professes his love for a co-worker just before accepting a new job abroad — only to have that offer rescinded and returning to his old workplace and continue working with his crush.
ABC Family’s other forays into aging up its core audience include a NYC-set satire of the 2008 financial meltdown developed by Ellen Pompeo. Debt will follow Lillian, a twentysomething SAT tutor who discovers that everyone around her owes something to someone, including the billionnaire parents she works for.
