Liz Meriwether has yet another comedy pilot on the way. “Single Parents,” a single cam project from the “New Girl” creator/EP and J.J. Philbin, received a pilot order at ABC. This marks Meriwether’s second pilot for the 2018–19 season. Deadline confirms that ABC also ordered “Steps” from Kristin Newman.
Written by Philbin, “Single Parents” was previously given a put pilot commitment. The project, which “revolves around a group of dysfunctional single parents who lean on each other as they raise their kids, look for love, and ultimately realize survival is only possible with the help of each other,” is based on a story by Meriwether and Philbin. The duo will exec produce with “New Girl” EP Katherine Pope.
“Daddy Issues,” Meriwether’s other pilot, received an order from Fox earlier this week. Erin Foster (“Barely Famous”) writes and stars, and Meriwether is producing.
Philbin writes for “New Girl.” She’s also written and produced series including “The O.C.” and “Heroes.”
“Steps” is based on the Swedish series “Bonus Family,” aka “Bonusfamiljen.” The blended family comedy centers on four adults who, following two divorces, are raising three kids in three different houses. Newman penned the pilot. She and Mandeville TV’s Laurie Zaks are among the exec producers.
Newman’s other credits as a writer and producer include “The Mayor,” “The Muppets,” “Galavant,” and “The Real O’Neals.”
ABC recently ordered a comedy pilot from “Juno” scribe Diablo Cody as well as three women-led dramas.
Pilots from Gloria Calderon Kellett, Michelle Nader, Amanda Green, and Ilene Chaiken, and a TV adaptation of Stephenie Meyer’s “The Chemist” are all in the works at other networks.
