ABC Orders New Pilots From Shondaland and Stephanie Savage

ABC picked up two women-centric pilots on Monday — new dramas from Shondaland and Fake Empire.

The Catch is the latest offering from the prolific executive producers of Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal, and How to Get Away with Murder, Betsy Beers and Shonda Rhimes. According to the Hollywood Reporter, the series will center “on a gutsy female forensic accountant who exposes fraud for a living and has finally found fulfillment both at work and in love until a case comes along that threatens to turn her world upside down.”

Sounds like what we’ve come to expect from Shondaland — an addictive narrative built around a complex female protagonist. Julie Ann Robinson (Scandal, Suburgatory, Weeds) is slated to direct the pilot.

If the series, which is written by Hannibal’s Jennifer Schur, is picked up, it will mean that Shondaland will have an impressive four shows on the broadcast schedule. The production company already dominates ABC’s Thursday lineup, so it’s looking like there may be a new weeknight to get your Shondaland fix.

Fake Empire’s Stephanie Savage and Josh Schwartz (Gossip Girl, The O.C.) are pulling the strings behind Broad Squad, which is “inspired by true stories and follows the first four women to graduate from Boston’s Police Academy in 1978.” Bess Wohl, perhaps best known for acting in CSI: NY and Flightplan, is set to write the script.
