Mimi Leder’s “On the Basis of Sex” traces Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s work in a landmark gender discrimination case. The events depicted in the biopic changed the world. And now the ACLU is hoping to change things again by using “On the Basis of Sex” itself.
The ACLU and Participant Media have launched “All Rise,” a national campaign pushing for workplace gender parity measures at the state level, to coincide with “On the Basis of Sex’s” recent theatrical expansion. “Tapping into the energy and spirit of the contemporary women’s rights movement, the ‘All Rise’ impact campaign is a multi-faceted, highly cultivated effort that engages audiences and communities by connecting themes of the acclaimed film to their work in support of gender equality,” a press release detailed.
The campaign will play “On the Basis of Sex” for law firms, corporations, and community grassroots organizations across the country. “All Rise” will also host screenings in five states introducing workplace equity legislation in 2019. Denver, Colorado; Richmond, Virginia; Louisville, Kentucky; Jackson, Mississippi; and Portland, Oregon have confirmed screenings so far. The goal is to gather local business leaders, policy makers, activists, and media to build support for gender equality measures in the workplace. “All Rise” has also created a digital advocacy toolkit “equipping audiences everywhere with current actions to take on the federal level in support of women’s rights across the country.”
“All Rise’s” areas of focus are equal pay, the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act, the FAMILY Act (Paid Family & Medical Leave Program), and the Equal Rights Amendment.
“Continuing the essential work started with ‘RBG’ this summer, we are excited and energized by this incredible film and its empowering message inspired by the remarkable life and career of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg,” said Holly Gordon, Chief Impact Officer for Participant Media. “We have a real opportunity here to reach audiences where key policies for workplace equality are in play, and we couldn’t be more thrilled to deepen our relationship with the ACLU in making lasting change for all women and families a reality.”
Lenora Lapidus, director of the ACLU’s Women’s Rights Project, added: “Justice Ginsburg is a luminary in the fight for gender equality and her legacy lives on at the ACLU decades after she founded the Women’s Rights Project. The ACLU is proud to work with Participant Media on a digital advocacy tool to educate people across the country on workplace equity issues and ways they can take meaningful action.”
