A month or so after British producer Expectation announced its TV adaptation of “Anna Karenina,” Deadline confirms another iteration of Leo Tolstoy’s classic is headed for the small screen. In a competitive deal, HBO Max snagged the rights to “Anna K: A Love Story,” Jenny Lee’s YA retelling of the story. The project was picked up with a put pilot commitment.
Currently in early development, the series is a “modern-day, empowering, multicultural” reimagining of the 19th-century novel.
“Anna K,” described as “‘Gossip Girl’ and ’13 Reasons Why’ meets ‘Crazy Rich Asians,'” navigates between Manhattan and Greenwich, Connecticut and follows a “Korean-American ‘it’ girl” caught in a love triangle between her family-approved boyfriend and her true love.
Lee will head the adaptation as creator and writer.
Keira Knightley re-teamed with her “Atonement” director Joe Wright to play the iconic character in 2012’s “Anna Karenina.” Helen McCrory played the role in PBS and Channel 4’s 2000 adaptation of the novel. Gwyneth Hughes is developing the aforementioned Expectation remake.
“Anna K” marks Lee’s debut YA novel. It will hit shelves in March.
Her previous TV writing credits include BET’s “Boomerang,” “Brockmire,” and “Young & Hungry.” She is the author of four essay collections and middle grade novel “Elvis and the Underdogs.”
