Agnes Gund Doc “Aggie” Acquired by Strand Releasing

"Aggie": Sundance Institute

Strand Releasing has snagged North American rights to “Aggie,” Emmy-nominated director Catherine Gund’s doc about her mother, art collector and philanthropist Agnes “Aggie” Gund. Variety broke the news.

An exploration of art, race, and justice, the doc examines the “power of art to transform consciousness and inspire social change,” the source details. “The elder Gund sold Roy Lichtenstein’s ‘Masterpiece’ in 2017 to launch the $100 million Art for Justice Fund to end mass incarceration.”

“Agnes’ story is such an inspiration to artists and activists of all fields, and we are thrilled to be able to share this magnificent film with a broad audience and inspire crucial discussions which lead to action,” said Marcus Hu of Strand Releasing.

Gund added, “Strand is the perfect home for ‘Aggie’ because they’re so good with visionary artists and films who, like me and my mother, seek to transport an audience to a more just and gorgeous world, and beyond that, to help create one.”

“Aggie” made its world premiere at Sundance in January. Strand is planning a fall release. The doc will be launched at New York’s Film Forum with a nationwide opening to follow.

When we asked Gund her advice for other women filmmakers she said, “Find a nugget that you don’t totally understand. Let the tiny fascination grow with your work and your collaborations. Discover something new so that you can share the power of revelation with your viewers. If it doesn’t interest you, it won’t interest anyone else either. Stick with it,” she emphasized. “Find mentors. Work with people who’ve done the work before and never stop yourself from imagining bigger than they do. Without the confines of convention and tradition and reality, your vision will be creative and persistent and beautiful.”

Gund’s other credits include “Chavela” and “Born to Fly.”
