French auteur Agnès Varda, “House of Cards” star and director Robin Wright, and Oscar-winning actress Melissa Leo are all set to receive honors at upcoming fests.
Varda and Wright will be feted at Marrakech Film Festival, The Hollywood Reporter confirms. They’ll both receive the fest’s Gold Star career achievement honor.
“Faces, Places” co-director Varda scored an Oscar nod earlier this year for the road trip documentary. She also took home an Honorary Award from the Academy. “Cléo from 5 to 7” and “The Gleaners and I” are among the influential Belgian-born filmmaker’s best known credits.
Wright has stepped into the lead role for “House of Cards'” upcoming sixth and final season, following co-star Kevin Spacey being fired from the show due to sexual abuse allegations. She’s received five Emmy nods for her role as Claire, who will take on the presidency of the United States come the show’s return on November 2. The “Wonder Woman” actress has directed 10 episodes of the political drama.
Marrakech Film Festival runs from November 30-December 8.
Leo will be presented with the inaugural Evolution ICON Award at the Evolution Mallorca International Film Festival, a press release announced. She’ll accept her award at a Centerpiece Gala Tribute in conjunction with a special screening of boxing drama “The Fighter,” for which she received the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress.
“Melissa Leo has built a career playing a range of eclectic and fascinating women, immersing into her characters completely and gifting the audience truthful and charged performances every single time. The Evolution ICON Award celebrates her trailblazing achievement as an actress and her unshakable independent spirit in today’s international film industry,” said EMIFF Founder and Executive Director Sandra Seeling Lipski.
Leo’s other credits include “I’m Dying Up Here,” “Treme,” and “Frozen River.”
Mallorca’s fest runs from October 25-31.
