Agnès Varda’s Last Film “Varda By Agnès” Acquired by BFI

"Varda By Agnès"

The film community is still mourning the recent loss of Agnès Varda, but we haven’t seen the last of the acclaimed French director’s work. Her final film, “Varda By Agnès,” has found a home following its world premiere at the Berlinale in February. The production arm of the British Film Institute snagged UK and Ireland rights to the documentary, Screen Daily reports.

“Varda By Agnès” sees the French New Wave pioneer providing insight into her creative process and works, which include “Cleo from 5 to 7,” “The Gleaners & I,” and “Faces Places.” She received an Oscar nod for the latter.

“I didn’t want to be a woman who makes films. I wanted to invent cinema and be proud to be a woman,” Varda said in 2018.” She explained that from the beginning of her career, she wanted to be “a radical” and touch on “subjects related to women.”

Varda died March 29.

“Varda By Agnès” will open July 19 in the UK and Ireland. No word on a U.S. release yet. Didier Rouget co-wrote and co-directed the feature.
