Already a household name in feminist, queer, and film circles, Alison Bechdel was named one of the 21 recipients of this year’s MacArthur “Genius Grant.”
Bechdel was in an Italian castle at an artist’s residency when she heard the news.
The author of the graphic novel Fun Home (the musical version of which is heading to Broadway in Spring 2015) and the progenitor of the Bechdel test is currently working on her third illustrated memoir. Scheduled for publication in 2017, The Secret to Superhuman Strength will explore Bechdel’s “decades-long obsession with various fitness and exercise fads, including downhill skiing, uphill skiing, rollerblading, martial arts, running, hiking, weight lifting and home workout videos and currently, yoga,” according to the NY Times. The book will also delve into the history of exercise trends and the connection between creativity and physical activity.
