All-Women Cohort Selected for Blackhouse Foundation’s Multicultural Producers Lab

Multicultural Producers Lab fellow Adetoro Makinde: Malika Ali-Harding

For the second year in a row, an all-women cohort has been selected for The Blackhouse Foundation’s Multicultural Producers Lab. Danni Conner, Trevite Willis, Avril Speaks, Adetoro Makinde, Letitia Guillory, Ashley Chrisman, and Jessica Funches have been announced as the program’s 2020 fellows. Deadline broke the news.

Producers of narrative and non-fiction content, these seven producers are described as “the best-of-the-best in film and television.”

Launched last year, the Multicultural Producers Lab’s mission is to “expand the number of multicultural production companies and executives, to increase their pipeline of content, and to support the sustainability of mid-career independent producers and the scale at which their projects and businesses operate.”

The program’s second edition will feature virtual symposiums, online workshops, and feedback sessions. “Starting on Feb. 5th through the 9th, the 2020 fellows will have the opportunity to engage in in-person industry meetings and a pitch fest to showcase their projects to film studios, networks, production companies, agencies, and management companies,” per the source.

Mekita Faiye, Manager of Original Movies at Lifetime Television, and Hidden Empire Film Group’s Roxanne Taylor will serve as lab leaders this year.

Projects set to be developed during the lab include Makinde’s drama feature “The American Can,” which sees a Marine vet facing his own demons and the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Willis will work on her feature doc “Black Voters Matter,” set during the buildup to the 2020 election, and Guillory her ’50s crime drama “Hound Dog,” which follows a producer trying to solve an R&B star’s mysterious death.

“There is an amazing African American talent pool above the line, below the line, and in your executive ranks that will deliver creatively, in ratings, in streams, downloads, at the box office, and to your bottom line,” said Dolly Turner, board member and director of the Blackhouse Multicultural Producers Fellowship. “We believe our program delivers a creative triple play by expanding the number of women-owned companies and senior executives who are more likely to hire women directors and support women-led stories.”

The inaugural Multicultural Producers Lab fellows were Quan Lateef, Kiara Jones, JaSaun Buckner, Roche Jeffrey, Chanelle Aponte Pearson, HaJ House, and Dahéli Hall.
