Allison Schroeder is taking “Minecraft” to the screen. The Oscar-nominated “Hidden Figures” screenwriter has been tapped to pen Warner Bros.’ adaptation of the wildly popular video game. The Hollywood Reporter confirmed the news.
The world-creation game is “known for its stylistic building blocks in which players choose either a ‘survival’ or ‘creative’ mode of play,” the source summarizes. “In the ‘survival’ mode, players choose an avatar that they must keep alive by replenishing their food and maintaining their health while seeking to build shelter and avoid nearby threats like zombies and spiders that could deplete their health. In ‘creative’ mode, players can free-build and don’t have to maintain the health of their characters.”
“Minecraft” is expected to arrive in theaters March 4, 2022.
Schroeder is best known for co-writing 2016 space race drama “Hidden Figures.” Based on a true story, the pic shines a long overdue spotlight on Katherine G. Johnson (Taraji P. Henson), Dorothy Vaughan (Octavia Spencer), and Mary Jackson (Janelle Monáe), brilliant African-American women who played an instrumental role in NASA’s space program. Schroeder spoke with Women and Hollywood about why she was the right person to pen the script and the work she’s doing with the WGA to create more opportunities for women.
Schroeder wrote “Frozen 2,” set to bow November 22. The sequel to Disney’s smash success sees sisters Anna and Elsa heading on an epic journey to find answers about the past.
