Alma Har’el Signs First-Look TV Deal with Amazon Studios

“Honey Boy” director Alma Har’el has inked a first-look television deal with Amazon Studios. According to Deadline, she will develop and create exclusive series for Amazon Prime Video via her new production company, Zusa. Har’el recently named exec Aanch Khaneja as the org’s Head of Development for TV/Film.

This won’t be the first time Har’el has collaborated with Amazon. Amazon Studios produced and distributed her narrative feature debut, “Honey Boy,” the story of a struggling actor coming to terms with his chaotic childhood and strained relationship with his father. She also as a scripted anthology series in the works with the streamer, “Women of the Year.” Based on the Time 100 Women of the Year initiative, the series will highlight trailblazing women and their achievements.

“Alma is a creative force, who brings the same kind of passion to storytelling as she does to lifting the voices and achievements of others,” said Amazon Studios head Jennifer Salke. “We’re so excited to continue our relationship with Alma and to collaborate on more exciting projects.”

“As an immigrant who is finally in a position to hire artists I admire, I’m committed to finding ways to include more global stories and international filmmakers in Zusa’s future projects,” Har’el stated. “Being given a platform to produce, write, and direct stories that capture my imagination is a freaking dream coming true.”

Har’el became the first woman to win the DGA Award for First-Time Feature Film with “Honey Boy.” She is also the first woman to receive DGA nominations for both commercial and narrative directing. Her other credits include docs “LoveTrue” and “Bombay Beach,” and she is the founder of Free the Work (formerly Free the Bid), a searchable database of underrepresented creators.

Next, Har’el is working with Natalie Portman and Lupita Nyong’o on Apple limited series “Lady in the Lake.” She’s directing and co-writing the project, as well as exec producing via Zusa.
