Amazon Orders Drama About a Female-Led ’70s Rock Band from Reese Witherspoon

Witherspoon's "Big Little Lies" Season 2 co-star Meryl Streep played a rocker in "Ricki and the Flash"

Reese Witherspoon has yet another project in development. Per The Hollywood Reporter, Amazon just ordered 13 episodes of “Daisy Chain & the Six,” a ’70s-set drama about a rock band based on a forthcoming novel of the same name. Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine holds rights to the book, and the Oscar-winning actress and “Big Little Lies” star and producer is among the series’ exec producers, as is Hello Sunshine’s Head of Film and Television, Lauren Neustadter.

Taylor Jenken Reid’s novel tells the story of a fictional female-led rock band, following them all the way from their roots in the LA music scene to becoming one of the most popular bands in the world.

“The Disaster Artist” writers Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber are penning the script for “Daisy Chain & The Six,” which is a co-production between Hello Sunshine and Amazon Studios, which controls worldwide rights.

“When I heard Hello Sunshine was developing ‘Daisy Jones & The Six,’ I tracked down a copy right away and devoured it in one sitting. I loved it so much I had to take it off the market and bring it to Amazon Studios,” said Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon Studios. “I was immediately struck by how perfectly it fit into our overall approach of bringing passionate creators and entertaining, compelling content to our Prime Video audience. Reese, Lauren, and I are kindred spirits!”

Witherspoon added, “As soon as I started reading ‘Daisy Jones & The Six,’ I immediately fell head over heels in love with it, and I’m thrilled to be bringing it to the screen with Amazon and Jen Salke, whose passionate pursuit of the material spoke volumes.” She continued, “With Neustadter and Weber, two writers I deeply admire, stewarding this project, I am so confident that Daisy and her band’s journey toward finding their voice will leave just as permanent a mark with viewers around the world as it did with me.”

A few weeks back it was announced that Mimi Leder (“The Leftovers,” “Deep Impact”) will be directing Apple’s upcoming untitled drama about morning shows starring Witherspoon and Jennifer Aniston. Including that project, Hello Sunshine has three projects in the works at Apple. The company is behind Octavia Spencer-starrer “Are You Sleeping?” and an adaptation of Curtis Sittenfeld’s short story collection “You Think It, I’ll Say It,” a comedy that Kristen Wiig was attached to star in before having to drop out to film “Wonder Woman 1984.”

Over at Hulu, Witherspoon has an adaptation of Celeste Ng’s best-selling 2017 novel “Little Fires Everywhere” on the way. She and “Scandal’s” Kerry Washington will star in and exec produce the Cleveland-set drama.

Witherspoon will reprise her Emmy-nominated role as Madeline in “Big Little Lie’s” sophomore season, which is expected to debut on HBO next year. Andrea Arnold (“American Honey”) is directing Season 2. Witherspoon’s upcoming film projects include a new installment of the “Legally Blonde” franchise.
