It seems the whole Internet has been abuzz with talk of “Prey” and its star Amber Midthunder since the film’s release on August 5 — and now Disney has announced that the film scored the No. 1 premiere on Hulu to date, including all film and TV series debuts.
The latest entry in the “Predator” franchise was also the most watched film premiere on Star+ in Latin America and Disney+ (under the Star banner) in all other territories, based on hours watched in the first three days of its release. However, it’s worth remembering that, as The Hollywood Reporter notes, Disney does not share total hours viewed, and there is no third-party verification for viewership figures reported by streamers.
Set in the 1700s, the film sees Midthunder’s Naru, a skilled Comanche warrior, protecting her tribe from the highly evolved alien predator at the center of the franchise that hunts humans for sport, with Naru “fighting against the wilderness, dangerous colonizers, and this mysterious creature to keep her people safe.”
Critical consensus on the film has been overwhelmingly positive, and the film stands out as one of few with a cast that is primarily made up of Indigenous actors, let alone a studio film with an Indigenous female lead. The 2021 “It’s a Man’s (Celluloid) World” report from Dr. Martha Lauzen and the Center for the Study of Women in Television and Film, which analyzed over 3,100 characters appearing in films last year, found that Native Americans comprised just 0.3 percent of female characters in speaking roles, and 0.4 percent of major female characters.
Speaking of her experiences shooting the film, Midthunder said in an interview with Empire that she had particularly enjoyed when “we were shooting on Stoney Nakoda reserve land, and I am Nakoda myself. I’m not Stoney Nakoda, but they’re related. I grew up around Southwestern tribes, so it was cool to be in an area where there were people who had a similar culture to me.” The actor, who had never worked with a large Indigenous cast before, added that it felt “very comfortable to be around so many other native people. There was an internship program and so there were native crew, and that was cool, too. … I’ve never been around that many native people at work, and that was just very, very special.”
Midthunder previously had series regular roles on FX’s “Legion” and The CW’s “Roswell, New Mexico.”
