A love story starring Kate Winslet and Saoirse Ronan is one step closer to hitting the screen. Neon has secured North American rights to Francis Lee’s “Ammonite,” a press release revealed.
Currently in post-production, the romantic drama is set in 1840s England and inspired by the life of fossilist Mary Anning (Winslet). The pic “revolves around the intense relationship between the infamous fossil hunter and a young woman (Ronan) sent to convalesce by the sea,” according to its official synopsis.
Deadline reports that the deal was $3 million for U.S. and Canada rights, and “several of the top prestige film distributors bid hard for it.”
“God’s Own Country,” Lee’s BIFA-winning feature directorial debut, also depicts a same-sex romance. The drama explores the connection between a Yorkshire farmer and the Romanian migrant worker who’s helping him out for the season.
A seven-time Oscar nominee, Winslet took home the honor for “The Reader.” She also received nods for “Steve Jobs,” “Little Children,” “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind,” “Iris,” “Titanic,” and “Sense and Sensibility.” “The Mountains Between Us” and “Wonder Wheel” are among her recent credits. Winslet will topline and exec produce “Mare of Easttown,” an upcoming HBO limited series that sees her playing a Pennsylvania detective investigating a local murder.
Ronan is up for an Oscar for her role as Jo in Greta Gerwig’s “Little Women,” in theaters now. She previously received nominations for “Lady Bird,” “Brooklyn,” and “Atonement.” Her recent credits include “Mary Queen of Scots” and “The Seagull.” You can catch her next in “The French Dispatch,” a comedy set in an outpost of an American newspaper in a fictional 20th century French city that’s set to hit theaters later this year.
“Ammonite” is expected to bow at a fest later this year “for an awards season release,” according to Deadline.
