HBO’s adaptations of “Big Little Lies” and “Sharp Objects” drew big ratings, critical acclaim, and awards attention for the premium cabler. Laura Dern scored an Emmy for her supporting role as Renata in the former and Amy Adams received a nod for her lead role as Camille in the latter. Now the pair are teaming up to bring another project based on a best-selling book to HBO. Dern and Adams are signed on to exec produce a series inspired by Claire Lombardo’s “The Most Fun We Ever Had.” Variety confirmed the news.
Released in June, the novel is described as “a multigenerational saga spanning half a century” following “four sisters, each struggling to exist in the shadow of their parents’ idyllic marriage, whose lives are complicated by the unexpected return of the son one of them gave up for adoption 15 earlier.”
Lombardo is writing the script and co-exec producing. Anya Epstein (“The Deuce”) will serve as showrunner.
It’s unclear whether Adams and/or Dern are planning to star in “The Most Fun We Ever Had.”
A six-time Oscar nominee, Adams has been recognized for her work in “Vice,” “American Hustle,” “The Master,” “The Fighter,” “Doubt,” and “Junebug.” You can catch her next in “The Woman in the Window,” a mystery about an agoraphobic woman who witnesses a crime. The pic hits theaters May 15.
Dern received Oscar nods for “Wild” and “Rambling Rose.” Her upcoming projects include divorce drama “Marriage Story,” due December 6, and Greta Gerwig’s take on “Little Women,” set to bow December 25.
Both Adams and Dern have other projects in the pipeline at HBO, including a limited series adaptation of Barbara Kingsolver novel “The Poisonwood Bible,” which tells story of a woman married to evangelical missionary who travels to the Belgian Congo in the throes of colonial upheaval in 1959, and “The Dolls,” a limited series inspired by the Christmas Eve riots that erupted over Cabbage Patch Dolls in 1983. Adams is exec producing the former and Dern is exec producing and starring in the latter alongside “Insecure’s” Issa Rae.
