Earlier this year Amy Schumer dropped her most recent stand-up special, Netflix’s “Growing.” While the title acknowledged her changing body, the comic was adamant that pregnancy wasn’t as transformative as she’d been led to believe: “You’re pregnant but you don’t change who you are,” she said. “I hate women who start to act really precious.”
The Emmy winner is about to spill plenty of more details about her famously difficult pregnancy: HBO Max ordered a doc that takes viewers behind the scenes of what it was like for her to prepare to embark on a stand-up tour while expecting. A press release announced the news.
Produced by Schumer, the doc, currently known as “Expecting Amy,” sees the “Trainwreck” star and screenwriter through “hospitalizations to going out in front of a crowd of thousands, to quiet moments at home with her family,” according to its official synopsis. “Beginning the day she found out she was pregnant, through the birth of her child, she showcases her incredible journey on the road, revealing just how challenging it can be working night after night, week after week, with no regrets or excuses.”
Schumer suffered from hyperemesis gravidarum during her pregnancy, and experienced severe nausea and vomiting, which she documented extensively on Instagram.
In “Growing” Schumer joked, “If you’re someone who enjoyed being pregnant, I hope your car flips over.”
“Amy Schumer is an inspiration and this project is such an honest look at her experience being on the road while preparing for her special,” said Sarah Aubrey, head of original content, HBO Max.“Her willingness to showcase her immense vulnerability, during the most challenging time in her life, is both empowering and hilarious.”
Schumer added, ”Women are warriors, every one of us. And I hope sharing my story brings more awareness to the challenges of pregnancy and childbirth.”
