If you enjoyed Midge and Rose’s adventures in the art world during Season 2 of “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” you’re going to love Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino’s next Amazon project. The producing partners and spouses are developing “Ninth Street Women,” Mary Gabriel’s nonfiction book about the five female painters who revolutionized 20th-century modern art, under their overall deal with the studio. The Hollywood Reporter broke the news.
Published last September, “Ninth Street Women” is the story of Lee Krasner, Elaine de Kooning, Grace Hartigan, Joan Mitchell, and Helen Frankenthaler, who “dared to enter the male-dominated world of 20th century abstract painting as artists (and not muses),” the source details. “These women changed American art and society, tearing up the prevailing social code and replacing it with a doctrine of liberation.”
“Ninth Street Women” was named one of of Time’s 10 best nonfiction titles of 2018 and a New York Times critics’ top book of 2018.
Gabriel will be a consulting producer on Amazon’s adaptation of “Ninth Street Women.” The author was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award with her book “Love and Capital: Karl and Jenny Marx and the Birth of a Revolution.” Her other works include “Notorious Victoria: The Life of Victoria Woodhull, Uncensored” and “The Art of Acquiring: A Portrait of Etta and Claribel Cone.”
The Sherman-Palladino-created “Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” will return for a third season on Amazon later this year. The dramedy centers on a ’50s housewife who breaks into the world of standup comedy when her husband leaves her. Sherman-Palladino exec produces, writes, and directs on the show alongside Palladino.
The Norman Lear Achievement Award in Television recipient made history at the 2018 Emmys when she won prizes for comedy writing and comedy directing for “Maisel” — marking the first time a woman has received both awards. “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” also nabbed best comedy series and several other trophies at the ceremony. Three Golden Globes, three SAG Awards, two PGA Awards, a WGA prize, and a Peabody are among the series’ many other accolades.
Sherman-Palladino created “Gilmore Girls,” its 2016 revival “Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life,” and “Bunheads.” She’s written, directed, and exec produced on all those projects, as has Palladino.
