Amy Sherman-Palladino Is Penning the “Gypsy” Remake

Sherman-Palladino: Television Academy/YouTube

“Gypsy” will be getting some trademark Amy Sherman-Palladino banter. The “Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” and “Gilmore Girls” creator has been linked to the New Regency feature as a director since February of this year, and now Sherman-Palladino has implied that she’ll also be writing its script.

The Emmy winner was asked if she was working on “Gypsy” during an interview with “ALL OF IT with Alison Stewart,” a WNYC radio show. According to Broadway World, she responded, “I gotta put ‘Maisel’ to bed this year, and then apparently I’m supposed to write some words that would be entertaining.”

Barbra Streisand signed on to the project years ago, but she’s since exited.

“Gypsy” tells the story of Mama Rose, a stage mother who pressures her two daughters to become vaudeville stars. The 1959 musical is based on the memoir of burlesque performer Gypsy Rose Lee.

Sherman-Palladino made history at the 2018 Emmys when she won prizes for comedy writing and comedy directing for “The Marvelous Maisel” — marking the first time a woman has received both awards. “Maisel” also nabbed best comedy series and several other trophies at the ceremony. Three Golden Globes, three SAG Awards, two PGA Awards, a WGA prize, and a Peabody are among the series’ many other accolades.

“Maisel’s” third season kicked off filming in March. No word on when the new season of the Rachel Brosnahan-starrer will premiere on Amazon.
